Looking to pool some knowledge on registrars people should look to or avoid when registering a new website.
Currently, I use iwantmyname.com – they’re alright, but a bit more expensive than other registrars I see out there. My .coms currently cost $22.49 USD a year, and I’m frankly not that sure if the service or UI is worth that premium. I’m open to options.
A registrar I definitely recommend avoiding: Epik. I used this registrar for a few years when I first got my own domain a few years ago. They’ve since been associated with some weird alt-right people, which turned me off. The straw that broke the camel’s back was when they had a huge data leak which compromised my payment information. I had to get a new debit card and everything. I switched immediately after.
A registrar that I’m curious about is Porkbun. Their domains seem less expensive than iwantmyname. They also appear to offer reasonably cheap email hosting – currently I self-host my mail but honestly it’s a bit of a headache in a few ways and if I can move that off of my VPS at the price Porkbun offers for email then I can save a bit of money by getting a cheaper VPS offering. I’d love to know more either good or bad from anyone who has used them.
I just use Namecheap, I don’t have much to say good or bad about them. Works for me.
